A federal jury was unable to reach a verdict on the first day of deliberations into the shooting death of a Navajo Nation man who was shot
and killed by a police officer in Farmington, New Mexico.
The family of Clint John, 21, accuses officer Shawn Scott of acting with excessive force. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages against Scott and the city of Farmington.
Scott said John was trying to attack him as police were responding to a domestic violence call. Jurors watched surveillance video, which captured parts of the June 2006 incident, and heard from eyewitnesses.
The case was heard in federal court in Albuquerque.
