The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation of California is asking the Bureau of Indian Affairs to place 2,000 acres in trust.

The properties are contiguous to the reservation. The tribe has already developed a golf course and hotel on the land and is planning an RV park, powwow grounds, an equestrian center, housing and an outdoor event area.

“We're caretakers of this land,” Chairman Daniel Tucker told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “We always have been. We always will be.”

The tribe has no plans for gaming on the site, having rejected a compact that would have authorized a second casino.
