The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe says a federal judge issued a favorable ruling in its lawsuit against the state of Michigan.

The tribe sued to clarify the boundaries of the Isabella Reservation. Judge Thomas Ludington excluded witnesses and evidence that could have hurt the case, the tribe said.

"The court's ruling excludes the witnesses proposed by the defendants that would have discussed the modern jurisdictional ramifications of the reservation boundary related to the jurisdictional theory proposed by the defendants," the tribe said in a statement quoted by The Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun. "The court held that Indian reservations may only be diminished by a subsequent act of Congress."

The Department of Justice supports the tribe in the case.
