Tribal leaders and Indian educators will meet in Washington, D.C., next week for the National Native Language Revitalization Summit.
The summit takes place Monday through Wednesday. Attendees will take part in training sessions, discussions and briefings with key members of Congress.
On Tuesday, the public is invited to the National Museum of American Indian for a program entitled "From Code Talkers to Immersion: Native American Language Summit." The day features a keynote by Darrell Robes Kipp (Blackfeet) of the Piegan Institute, a tribute to the Native soldiers who served as Code Talkers, film screenings and panel discussions.
Nearly every Native language in the U.S. is considered threatened, due to the dwindling number of fluent speakers.
