A federal judge dismissed a land claim filed by two members of the recently recognized Mashpee Wampanoag
Tribe of Massachusetts.
Judge George O’Toole said Amelia Bingham and her son, Steven, lacked standing to bring the suit. He said the Binghams can't claim land on behalf of a tribe and that they haven't demonstrated they are direct descendants of the Wampanoags who signed a land deed at issue in the claim.
The defendants in the case are the town of Mashpee and the state of Massachusetts. The town agreed to support the tribe's federal recognition after the tribe promised not to file a land claim.
