Tlingit elder, 94, awarded honorary doctorate
Herman Kitka, a 94-year-old elder from the Sitka Tribe, was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Alaska. Kitka, a World War II veteran, was honored for his vast knowledge of traditional culture and subsistence and for his leadership. He was a founding officer of his tribe and helped develop the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. Kitka received his Doctorate of Humane letters at a ceremony last Friday. He has lectured at the University of Alaska. "Herman Kitka not only witnessed Alaska history but has embodied and shaped it in important ways," said fellow instuctor Thomas Thornton, KSTK Public Radio reported. Get the Story:
