The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island and the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts are interested in acquiring surplus U.S. Navy properties.
The properties are located on Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island. The land is part of Narragansett territory, John Brown, the medicine man in training for the Narragansett Tribe, said.
The Navy already started the process to dispose of the properties but the tribes didn't know about it, Brown said. "We weren’t involved or notified," Brown told The Providence Journal. "It was like a sign that said ‘No Indians."
The Navy agreed to extend the process after the Bureau of Indian Affairs, on behalf of the tribes, asked for more time.
