The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York might gain possession of an historic document after all.
At an auction over the weekend, Subchief Pamela Brown bid on the 1851 petition to lease Barnhart Island for 999 years. But she lost to Gregory S. Caron, who has offered to sell it to the tribe for $994.50 -- the amount he paid.
"I know I could have gotten a lot more than that in the right setting," Caron told The Watertown Daily News. "I don't care how much money I make."
Brown previously said the tribe wanted to display the document in its museum.
