Oglala woman recommended for USDA position
Elsie Meeks, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, could soon be joining new administration of President Barack Obama.
Meeks has been recommended to serve as the director of Department of Agriculture Rural Development Office. She is being supported by Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota).
"My recommendation of Elsie to President Obama is a reflection of her extraordinary service, commitment, and unwavering dedication to the Native American community. I know she will use her vast breadth of experience to help our entire state on economic development issues. I look forward to this process moving forward," said Johnson.
Meeks currently serves as president and chief executive officer of First Nations Oweesta Corporation in South Dakota. She has worked to improve economic development opportunities in Indian Country.
“I am very proud of what Oweesta has accomplished in just 10 short years," Meeks said. "Our staff is the best of the best and together we have propelled the issue of Native community economic development and financial education forward at the tribal, state and national levels."
If selected by Obama, Meeks would have to be confirmed by the Senate for the post. She was the first Native American to serve on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
