The Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma opposes the move of Geronimo's remains to New Mexico, Chairman Jeff Houser said.
Geronimo was buried at Fort Sill, a military installation, after his death of February 17, 1909. He was born in New Mexico, the ancestral home of his Apache band.
Houser said Geronimo should stay in Oklahoma. He will ask his tribe to intervene in a lawsuit that seeks to move the remains to New Mexico.
Geronimo's great-grandson, Harlyn Geronimo, filed the lawsuit and said the Apache warrior should be returned home.
