A bill to settle the water rights of the Navajo Nation in New Mexico has been introduced in the 111th Congress.
Rep. Ben Ray Lujan (D-New Mexico) introduced the settlement as part of a larger package of water and environmental bills. Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-New Mexico) included the deal in a massive public lands package.
The settlement resolves the tribe's claims to the San Juan River. It authorizes a major pipeline that will serve the reservation and the city of Gallup.
