Tribal members and their activists held a protest at the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth, Minnesota, to support the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior
Chippewa.
The tribe is trying to buy back lands within its original reservation. But officials in St. Louis County are opposing the tribe's land-into-trust applications even though the tribal land base makes up less than 1 percent of the county acreage.
The county also refuses to sell tax-forfeited forest land to the tribe. State law requires the tribe to be given the first opportunity to purchase property within reservation boundaries.
More than 120 people attended the protest, The Duluth News Tribune reported.
