The nomination of former Sen. Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) to be Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services has been held up over issues related to his failure to pay certain taxes.
Daschle, who was among the early backers of President Barack Obama, goes before his former colleagues today to explain his tax issues. Due to his stature on Capitol Hill, it is believed he will overcome obstacles to his nomination.
During his time in the Senate, Daschle advocated for Indian trust reform and sought to boost the budget of the Indian Health Service. He has pledged to improve health care for American Indians and Alaska Natives.
