Northern Arapaho Tribe seeks Yellowstone bison
The Northern Arapaho Tribe of Wyoming could receive a small herd of bison from Yellowstone National Park. Federal and state officials are recommending that the 41 bison be transferred to the Wind River Reservation. The animals are currently being held in a quarantine compound in Montana, where they tested negative for brucellosis, a disease that can kill cattle. For that reason, ranchers in Montana are opposing the transfer of any animals. State Sen. John Brenden, a Republican, plans to introduce a bill to block the move, which requires final approval by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Bison that wander out of Yellowstone are frequently slaughtered by Montana officials under a federally-approved management plan. Get the Story:
