Tulalip Tribes put youth in hands of elders
Elders of the Tulalip Tribes of Washington play a key role in the justice system on the reservation.

The Elders Court started three years ago. First-time offenders between the ages of 18 and 25 are referred there for specialized treatment that aims to make them productive members of society.

"With the ones who are successful in Elder Court, we don't wind up with them back in criminal court," Tribal Court Judge Gary Bass told The Everett Herald. "You get them to start learning about their culture, their heritage, and you can actually change the way they act in their life."

Eight people have graduated from the Elders Court so far. Their charges are wiped clean if they complete the program.
