The U.S. Supreme Court will hear its next Indian law cases in February 2009.

On February 23, the court will hear US v. Navajo Nation. The federal government is seeking to avoid liability for the handling of a coal mining lease between the Navajo Nation and Peabody Energy.

On February 25, the court will hear Hawaii v. Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The state is trying to sell or transfer 1.2 million acres of Native Hawaiian lands before resolving the political status of Hawaii's indigenous population.
