Democrats picked up another seat in the Senate with the election of Democrat Jeff Merkley in Oregon.
The votes are still being counted but incumbent Sen. Gordon Smith (R) conceded yesterday after ballots tipped the race towards Merkley. Smith has been supported by Oregon tribes and has testified before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee on health issues.
Democrats now have at least 55 seats in the Senate, along with two independents who organize with them. The results of the races in Alaska and Minnesota aren't known. A run-off in Georgia is being scheduled.
