Navajo Nation voters in Shiprock, New Mexico, ousted their chapter leader by just 68 votes on Tuesday.
William Lee defeated incumbent Duane "Chili" Yazzie in the race for president of the Shiprock Chapter.
Lee previously served as president from 1992 to 2000, when he was defeated by Yazzie.
Yazzie faced questions about his relationship with a convicted businessman who defaulted on a loan with the tribe. Lee said he will restore transparency and accountability to chapter business.
The chapter's biggest issue is a controversial power plant that tribal members oppose. The Navajo Nation wants to build the $3 billion Desert Rock Energy
Project near Shiprock.
