Attorneys met behind closed-doors on Wednesday to consider the fate of the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Canada.

Harry LaForme, an Ontario appeal court justice and member of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, resigned as chairman last week. Native leaders presented a plan to name his replacement in order to move the healing process forward.

There has been talk of replacing the remaining two commissioners, whom LaForme accused of ignoring his role. But one lawyer said that probably won't be necessary.

The government spent $1.9 billion to compensate former students of Native residential schools that were managed by various churches.
