Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, (R), called on Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) to resign after he was convicted in a corruption case.
McCain said Stevens "has broken his trust with the people" for being found guilty of making false statements. "Alaskans are grateful for his decades of public service, but the time has come for him to step aside,' said Palin, who has raised funds for Stevens in the past.
Stevens does not plan on resigning and says he will appeal the verdict. His name will stay on the November 4 ballot, due to state election rules, leading some Republicans to hope he will win re-election but step aside and keep the seat in Republican hands.
