The Writers Guild of America West has created a American Indian Writers Caucus to develop Indian talent in Hollywood.
The group has 11 members so far. They include Steven Judd (Kiowa/Choctaw), who was working at a bingo hall owned by the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma until earlier this year.
"When I was a kid, I didn't know you can make money writing," Judd told The Loss Angeles Times. He's now working on projects through a fellowship from Disney-ABC Television Group and Walt Disney Studios.
Kim Myers, the WGAW's diversity director, said Indian writers have a tough time in Hollywood, where there are few roles and jobs for Indian talent.
