An 18-year-old high school student who was a member of the Red Lake Nation of Minnesota was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in Minneapolis.
Jesse Mickelson died Saturday evening after being shot in an alley behind his home. His guardian speculated the assailants were targeting a nearby house.
"Jesse didn't know to run," Heidi Crandell told The Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Friends and family recalled Mickelson for his positive attitude. An aspiring rapper, he encouraged fellow Indian youth to follow their musical aspirations.
"Some of us were discouraged because we believed we weren't good enough," friend Kara Pacheco said. "He'd cheer us up by making us laugh, and said, 'You can do it.'"
