Kristin Joe, a 19-year-old member of the Navajo Nation, has joined the Community Relations Commission in Farmington, New Mexico.
Joe completes the commission, which was formed to address race relations in the city. She was asked to join to bring a young perspective to the group's work.
"She'll be a value to the other members on the commission as well as a value to young people," Mayor Bill Standley told The Farmington Daily Times.
Joe, a freshman at San Juan College , said she hasn't experienced racism firsthand but knows friends who have felt it. "I know it happens," she told the paper.
The commission is chaired by David John, a Navajo business owner.
