The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department says it owes least 7,000 Indian veterans as much as $2 million for taxes that were illegally paid to the state.
The veterans were assessed state income taxes while serving in the military. That violated federal law but the veterans weren't told about it.
The veterans are entitled to refunds but a three-year statute of limitations in state law posed a hurdle to recovering their money. State Sen. John Pinto, a Democrat from the Navajo Nation, sponsored a bill to pay back the veterans.
"The state government illegally taxed veterans," Pinto told The Farmington Daily Times. "The veterans want their money back."
