American Indians have a higher incidence of stroke than African-Americans or Whites, according to a study published in Circulation on Monday.
The rate of stroke among more than 4,500 members of 13 tribes was 679 per 100,000. That was higher than the 607 per 100,000 among African-Americans and 306 per 100,000 among whites.
The Strong Heart Study is the largest study of stroke among American Indians. It began in 1989 and included more than 13 years of follow up.
The 13 tribes were located in Arizona, Oklahoma and North and South Dakota.
