Native inmates are being denied access to elders and aren't allowed to take part in ceremonies, one of the men who escaped from a prison told CBC News.
Daniel Wolfe, 32, was among six Native inmates who broke out of the Regina Correctional Centre on August 24. He said he was motivated to leave in part by the prison's treatment of fellow Natives, who make up a significant percentage of the population at the facility.
"There's more issues to that place than that, you know, it was the way they treated us mostly, in that place," Wolfe told CBC News in an interview from Manitoba, where he was recaptured on Wednesday.. "I mean, like, for human rights kind of thing."
Wolfe is facing trial on two counts of first-degree murder. He allegedly took part in a shooting after the Treaty 4 Gathering last year. The File Hills Qu'Appelle Tribal
Council cut this year's powwow short out of safety concerns.
Of the six inmates who escaped, Ryan John Agecoutay, 25, remains at large.
