Curtis Hillman Sr., a member of the Karuk Tribe, died from injuries he suffered while fighting a recent fire in California.
Hillman was helping clear roads for fire crews when he was injured by a grader on August 25. He was hospitalized before dying on September 11.
Hillman was 77. Flags at the California Capitol will be flown at half staff for him.
