A public school program has reduced the drop out rate among youth of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana.

The Blackfeet Academy Wilderness Adventure/Mentoring Program incorporates Blackfeet culture. Students go on weekend outdoor adventures to learn leadership skills and become more responsible.

Since the Browning Public School started the program, the dropout rate has gone from 38 percent to about 30 percent. "I think it saved a lot of kids. It saved me," 16-year-old Jack Many Bears Ground told The Great Falls Tribune.

The program has been awarded a three-year, $1 million grant to expand.
