A 17-year-old from Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in northern Manitoba has been charged with second-degree murder.
The teen is accused of stabbing Bernard Spence, 20. The incident occurred a day after Spence was honored for helping save the life of a teen who was trying to commit suicide.
"He had been honoured by the wellness centre as a hero for his actions," stepfather Eric Smith told The Winnipeg Sun. "Bernard and another individual had intervened and were able to save the youth's life."
Spence was killed as he slept on Wednesday morning.
