The Alaska Federation of Natives hosted a roundtable on "affordable" energy on Tuesday but participants said fuel and heating costs are anything but that in Native villages.
Gov. Sarah Palin (R), Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) were told that some village residents are paying up to $3,500 a month on fuel. Native leaders said they are counting on an energy rebate but criticized a proposal to lower it from $1,200 to $500.
"It's a slap to our face," said Matthew Nicolai, the president of Calista Corp., an Alaska Native regional corporation, The Anchorage Daily News.
