Legislation to settle two Pueblo water rights cases in New Mexico was introduced in the Senate and the House on Thursday.
One component of S.3381, the Aamodt and Taos Pueblo Indian Water Rights Settlement Act, settles the long-running Aamodt case over the water rights of Pojoaque, Nambe, Tesuque and San Ildefonso pueblos. It authorizes the construction of a regional water system that is expected to cost $160 million over the next decade.
The other component settles the Abeyta case over the water rights of Taos Pueblo. The bill authorizes approximately $114 million in small water projects and direct funding to the tribe.
