Former Republican House speaker Newt Gingrich wants to work with tribes to develop programs that address health disparities in Indian Country.
Gingrich is the founder of the Center for Health Transformation, a national think tank of health-related organizations. He says he is making Indian health care one of his missions.
"I hope it is the continuation of a long interest, that we might develop programs," Gingrich told The Sioux Falls Argus Leader. "Clearly, the focus on preventive health and wellness is very important."
Gringrich was in South Dakota with Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin (D-South Dakota) to talk about efforts by Sanford Health to address disparities on reservations in the state. Gringrich has served as an adviser to Sanford, the largest medical facility in the area.
