The Yakama Nation of Washington has banned new dairy operations and expansions of existing facilities.
Tribal and non-tribal members have complained about dairies on the reservation. They say the farms and feedlots are polluting the water and the air.
After weighing the issue for a couple of months, chairman Ralph Sampson Jr. said it was time to take action. A new operation, with up to 7,000 cows, is being planned on non-Indian owned land on the reservation.
