Few Indian teachers in North Dakota, Minnesota
It's getting harder and harder to find Indian teachers in Minnesota and North Dakota. In Minnesota, only 250 out of more than 55,000 teachers are Indian. That's down from 290 Indian teachers 10 years ago. In North Dakota, less than three percent of the state’s 9,000 teachers are Indian. About 10 percent of the student population is Indian. "We have a limited pool of American Indian graduates, and education is not the only field competing for those students,” Minnesota Department of Education Assistant Commissioner Morgan Brown told The Fargo Forum. Jeri LaRoque is one of the few Indian teachers in North Dakota. She entered the career in order to show Indian youth that they can succeed. “I know where students are coming from because I’ve been there,” LaRoque told the paper. “I tell them if I did it, anybody can.” Get the Story:
