Voters of the Standing Rock Sioux
Tribe rejected a name change but approved a new membership standard in special election on June 11.
A proposal to rename the tribe as the Standing Rock Oyate was rejected by 337-225. Oyate means people or nation, and has been adopted by the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate.
Voters, however, agreed to change the tribe's membership standards by 381-180. Anyone with one-quarter Dakota, Lakota and Nakota blood and with enrolled parents and grandparents can seek membership.
