Johnny Hunt, a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, has been elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Hunt, who is a pastor in Georgia, hopes to unite church members and attract more young people. The SBC is the largest Baptist association in the world.
Hunt is likely the first Native American to lead the Baptists. He said he was "proud of my heritage," according to news reports.
