Native people are only 6 percent of the population in Alberta but Native kids represent 59 percent of the foster care population.
The numbers show that more Native kids are going into foster care. In 2003, 54 percent of children in the system were Native.
The picture is similar throughout Canada. According to a federal audit, at least one in 20 on-reserve Native children are in some form of foster care -- a figure put at 8,300 by The Calgary Herald.
