Tribes and unions are top donors to Tom Udall

Tribes and labor unions are the biggest donors to the U.S. Senate campaign of Rep. Tom Udall (D-New Mexico).

According to Federal Election Commission records, organized labor donated at least $82,500 to Udall's campaign from January through March, the Associated Press reported. More than a dozen tribes donated $29,300 during the same time.

Among labor unions, two of the biggest donors were the Teamsters ($10,000) and the United Auto Workers ($10,000). Among tribes, the biggest donors were the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians in California ($4,300) and the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan ($4,000).

Both unions have tried to organize at tribal casinos. The two tribes have been a particular target of unions.

Udall sits on the House Natural Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over Indian issues. He is a member of the Congressional Native American Caucus and voted against a measure to restrict the application of federal labor law to tribes.
