'Outstanding' Navajo women honored in New Mexico


Three members of the Navajo Nation are being honored with the Outstanding New Mexico Women Award.

Hazel Dayish, Tina Deschenie, and Rena G. Martin are among 21 women to receive the award. They were selected from 80 nominees.

Dayish is the secretary and treasurer for the Shiprock Chapter. She was recognized for her education initiatives on the reservation.

Deschenie is the editor of the Tribal College Journal for the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. She was recognized for her activism, writings and education efforts.

Martin is the owner of Dinetahdoo Cultural Resources Management, a nonprofit that helps the Navajo Nation with archaeological and ethnographic surveys. She is one of the first Indian anthropologists.

The women will receive their awards on May 2.
