The
New York Yankees have placed Joba Chamberlain, a member of the
Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, on the bereavement list as he attends to his father, who has been hospitalized.
Harlan Chamberlain, 55, collapsed at his home in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Sunday. Joba, 22, was informed during a game against the
Red Sox in Boston and reportedly broke down in tears.
Joba Chamberlain and his sister are now with their father, who is in critical condition at the
Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center. The family has asked the hospital not to release any further information.
The Red Sox incidentally have a Native player on the team:
Jacoby Ellsbury, who is Navajo and a member of the
Colorado River Indian Tribes.
