An Albuquerque, New Mexico, police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of Vera "Tonie" Haskell, a Navajo woman.
Haskell, 47, was killed on Sunday in the southeast part of Albuquerque. The accident occurred just a few blocks away from the place where her son, Jeremy, 25, was struck and killed by a vehicle in July 2006.
"This is all so tragic," Haskell's sister, Verni Yazza, told The Albuquerque Journal. "After her son died, she lost it. She was very depressed, and she was so depressed that she wanted to die sometimes."
Surveillance tape shows a person resembling Sgt. Andrew Gallegos hitting Haskell in a parking lot of a bar.
The incident is being investigated.
