Lawmakers weigh moving Forest Service to DOI

Members of the House Interior Appropriations subcommittee have asked the Government Accountability Office to study a potential move of the U.S. Forest Service from the Department of Agriculture. to the Department of the Interior.

Rep. Norm Dicks (D-Washington), the chairman of the subcommittee, and Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kansas), the top Republican, think the move could save money and improve the management of federal lands. They say Forest Service functions like firefighting and conservation fit closer with agencies at Interior like the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Interior hasn't taken a position on the issue, nor has Agriculture.
