Quarter of bison in Yellowstone sent to slaughter

About of quarter of the bison in Yellowstone National Park have been sent to slaughter this winter.

A record 1,195 bison have been killed. That's the highest since 1996, when public outrage over the slaughter put a halt to the practice.

But as the bison leave the park in search of food, they are shot by hunters or rounded up by federal government and sent to slaughter. An agreement with the state of Montana allows the animals to be killed for fear that they might transmit brucellosis, a deadly disease, to cattle.
