Oneida Nation, village at odds over sovereignty

The Oneida Nation and the village of Hobart, Wisconsin, are at odds over the tribe's sovereignty.

The tribe passed a resolution stating that it would not pursue a services agreement with the village. But the village says it is open to further negotiations.

The dispute has ended up in federal court. The tribe is suing the village to stop the condemnation of tribally-owned fee lands within the reservation.

According to the village, the tribe must go through the land-into-trust process before asserting sovereignty over its properties. The Native American Rights Fund and the National Congress of American Indians are monitoring the case.
