Iowa lawmakers weigh Native commission

A bill to create a Commission on Native American Affairs is making its way through the Iowa Legislature.

The commission would have 11 members. Four would represent the tribes with land in Iowa: the Meskwaki Tribe, the Winnebago Tribe, the Omaha Tribe and the Ponca Tribe. Of the other seven, one must be a tribal member who lives on tribal land.

The bill was approved by a House committee this week. If enacted into law, the commission would be seated by September 1.
