Red Lake Nation to hold drug and gang summit

The Red Lake Nation of Minnesota is holding its second drug and gang summit on Thursday and Friday of this week.

The mission of the summit, entitled “Listening to One Another," is to educate and mobilize tribal agencies, professionals, schools and community members to combat drugs and crimes on the Red Lake Reservation. Committees formed at the summit will advise communities how to effectively address issues of crime, drugs and violence while working closely with tribal leaders.

An opening address on Thursday will be given by Chairman Floyd Jourdain, Jr. after the opening prayer and honor song. Jourdain will give an update on progress made regarding drug and gang issues over the last year.

Thursday’s sessions include a session on gang awareness with Minneapolis Police Sergeant William Blake, a tribal memer and chairman of the Native American Law Enforcement Summit, and Robert Thunder, a retired Minneapolis police officer. Other sessions during the day include the effects of drugs on the body and how addiction can lead to suicide.

Friday’s sessions include talks on methamphetamines, crack/cocaine, Red Lake’s Chemical Health Programs, and tribal courts. Friday will also include a break-out session, and entertainment in the evening.
