Artman to launch inter-tribal economic initiative

Assistant secretary Carl Artman, the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, will kick off the intertribal economic consortium initiative today.

Artman will be joined by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The tribes are signing a memorandum of understanding to promote economic development in Indian Country by encouraging the purchase of tribal goods.

"This intertribal economic consortium initiative will create a platform for tribal economic growth,” Artman said. “It is a platform that helps resource-rich, cash-poor tribes by linking them to those with purchasing power. Forging those links between supply and demand is necessary for building strong tribal economies, and that is good both for Indian Country and all Americans.”

The ceremony takes place at 11am in Room 7000 of the main Interior Department building in Washington, D.C.
