Diabetes study found increased risk of death

Federal officials halted part of a diabetes study after discovering that lowering blood sugar levels led to an increased risk of death from heart attack or stroke.

In a study of 10,000 middle-aged and older people with Type 2 diabetes, researchers were trying to drive blood sugar to normal levels. But they were surprised when they found that the group undergoing more aggressive treatment was at a higher risk of dying from heart attack or stroke.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common kind. American Indians and Alaska Natives suffer from the disease at rates higher than the general population.
