Pilot shows Alaska Native student improvement

A pilot project in Anchorage has improved Alaska Native student achievement levels, according to a a report released from the University of Alaska's Institute of Social and Economic Research.

Since the Alaska Native Pilot Project started in 2005, Native graduation rates increased from 37.5 percent in 2005 to almost 43 percent in 2007. Dropout rates decreased and proficiency scores increased.

Despite the improvements, Native students trail in achievement. At the Romig Middle School, 65 percent of Native students were proficient at reading and 52 percent were proficient at math, compared to 88 percent of whites in reading and 77 percent in math.
