Agency backs Alaska Native bowhead whale hunt

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is proposing to maintain the Alaska Native bowhead whale hunt.

The final environmental impact statement allows a total of 255 bowhead whales to be harvested between 2008 through 2012. That's essentially the same quota currently allocated to Alaska Native villages.

The NOAA has an agreement with Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission to manage the subsistence hunt. Bowhead whales are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
